Porcelain Tile Versus Ceramic Tile?

Porcelain Tile Versus Ceramic Tile?

Porcelain tiles are often found in commercial buildings, but they’re growing in popularity for residential applications. They are available in several finishes: unglazed, matte or polished. Porcelain tile is actually a type of ceramic tile. Both are made from a mixture of clay and other materials that is kiln fired. The only difference is that porcelain goes through an extra refinement and purification process, making it stronger and denser. Porcelain tile has a much lower rate of water absorption. Porcelain tile is fired at extremely high temperatures, porcelain is also frost resistant so it can be used in interior and exterior applications. Porcelain Tile is stronger than Ceramic Tile if you were to drop say a glass mayonnaise jar on porcelain the jar is sure to break without damaging your porcelain tile. There are four main types of porcelain. Full body porcelain, porcelain glazed tile,  The through body porcelain is the most preferred because the color is uniform throughout, so if there were a chip you wouldn’t notice it. Full Body Porcelain – Full body tiles are made from pressing the same (expensive) colored dust throughout the whole body of the tile and they are therefore more expensive to buy than double loaded tiles. This is the traditional way to
manufactured unglazed porcelain tiles. Double Load Porcelain – double load porcelain tiles are a fairly recently technical
introduction and have the same material dust throughout and provide the same technical performance but use a neutral color dust to form the base of the tile and then colored dust forms the top level. Beware of flooring stores advertising tile as porcelain when it is actually a white body ceramic. It’s unethical, but it does happen.  All tile is more durable after it is installed versus as loose pieces, therefore they still needs to be handled with care until installed.

Ceramic tile is made up of sand, natural products, and clays and once it has been moulded into shape they are then fired in a kiln. When manufacturing ceramic tile it is either be glazed or unglazed, but the majority of homeowners have glazed ceramic tiles in their home.During the firing process, ceramic tile will shrink, on average, by about 10% in size. For example a 12” by 12” floor tile will actually measure 11-7/8 inches square.  The world of ceramic tile is wide and spectacular, with a seemingly endless family of product choices and style options. Ceramic tile flooring and wall products are offered in a broad range of textures, patterns and sizes. When combined with a spectrum of grout and glaze options, they offer significant design options for any room in virtually any home style. The goal is to know what is the best combination of aesthetics, style and performance that fits your floor covering budget.
